Early Victorian Rare Engraved Glass and Silver Plate Claret Jug with Bulbous Base and Bacchus Mount Horticultural Motif 1860 Chinoiserie

Early Victorian Rare Engraved Glass and Silver Plate Claret Jug with Bulbous Base and Bacchus Mount Horticultural Motif 1860 Chinoiserie

€250.00

A very special early Victorian claret jug including incredibly detailed engraved glass and silver plate mount.

The overall motif for this piece is horticultural - inspired by the Chinoiserie trend that swept England in the mid 1800s.

From the bulbous base (which represents a rippling lake) the motif continues up the glass presenting a mix of leaves, plants and wildlife (birds). Reaching the silver plate mount, the story concludes with the tips of the plants - all the while being watched over by the mythical god of wine - Bacchus.

The glass is offered to you in perfect condition. You can can see from the photos the plating has rubbed in places to the mount and handle and there is a one inch hairline crack to the mount. This has not compromised the strength of the mount - it remains securely attached to the jug.

A special addition to your next dining experience.
